China-ASEAN Joint Laboratory of Mariculture Technology Supported by the Belt and Road Initiative is granted by the national Ministry of Science and Technology in 2021, as a strategic platform for the technological innovation on the national level. Based in Sun Yat-sen University in China, the Laboratory focuses on mariculture technology and will conduct joint research with ASEAN research institutions in the agriculture and marine fields. Specifically, Xiamen Center of the Laboratory is based in Xiamen University. The Xiamen Center will focus on cooperation with ASEAN countries and the European Union on seaweed science and technology, including: (i) construction of government-industry-university-research cooperation network; (ii) organization of joint research and academic exchanges; (iii) ASEAN tropical seaweed resources collection and sharing services; (iv) technical training of ASEAN young scholars and fishermen; (v) demonstration of seaweed aquaculture technology.
