GO2NE Webinar on Ocean Deoxygenation

2022-07-12

The 13th session of the GO2NE Webinar Series on Ocean Deoxygenation took place on 21st June, 2022. The webinar was hosted by the IOC-UNESCO Global Ocean Oxygen Network (GO2NE) and co-sponsored by COASTAL-SOS. About 150 people from around the world attended the webinar and joined the live discussion. Prof. Guizhi Wang from the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), Xiamen University, China chaired the webinar.

Dr. Yangyang Zhao from MEL, Xiamen University gave a presentation on “Interactive hypoxia-acidification in coastal waters responds to ocean warming”. He pointed out that direct thermal effect and indirect dissolved inorganic carbon effect would act synergistically on mitigating the decrease in the saturation state of calcium carbonate (Ω) caused by atmospheric CO2 forcing, while offset each other on pH decrease. In the future with ocean warming, further pH decrease during oxygen decline within water residence time will be expected, while Ω decrease will be mitigated.

Dr. Esther Portela from Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania, Australia shared her recent work on the “Physical mechanisms driving oxygen uptake by the ocean interior”. She found out that up to 70% of the global oxygen uptake occurred during the Mode Water formation, which took place over only 35% of the outcropping surface, and that global oxygen uptake exhibited important regional variability and different regions were dominated by different subduction mechanisms.

The next session of the GO2NE Webinar is planned on 13 July.

Background info:

GO2NE -The Global Ocean Oxygen Network - was established by IOC in 2016 to facilitate interactions and communication among researchers studying various aspects of deoxygenation, to develop capacity building activities, and to help inform policymakers on the issue of declining ocean oxygen. They host the monthly GO2NE Webinar on Ocean Deoxygenation, which offers scientists, stakeholders and the interested public the possibility to listen to two scientists (one junior and one senior) presenting the underlying mechanisms and impacts of ocean deoxygenation.
